The rank insignia differed beteen the Union and Confederate states during the Civil War. See below how each appeared during that time in our history. With both sides, their was one distinct similarity in the rank insignias; color. The background of officers rank and the color of enlisted cheverons would show what branch of service the soldier was part of. Red was for artillery, blue for infantry, yellow for cavalry, black could mean a number of things: Brigade/Battalion staff, medical, militia, or Confederate early war. |
